PLURIELLES

Strengthening Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Benin, Burkina Faso, and Mali

The PLURIELLES project has one core goal: ensuring women and adolescent girls facing vulnerability and marginalization can better understand and exercise their rights to health – particularly their sexual and reproductive health and rights.

The barriers women encounter are interconnected: limited access to health information, social pressures, lack of awareness of their rights, and economic dependence. Addressing only one of these needs is not enough.
This is why PLURIELLES brings together three sectors that are traditionally siloed:

  1. Health: access to services and information
  2. Human rights: legal protection and awareness of rights
  3. Economic empowerment: financial independence and freedom of choice

By combining these three levers, the project tackles the root causes of vulnerability.

Tangible Results

Since 2021, in Benin, Burkina Faso, and Mali, PLURIELLES has been working across multiple levels to strengthen existing resources, break down silos, and foster collaboration among professionals in health, law, and economic development.

This collective effort is delivering meaningful outcomes:

– 90 health facilities strengthened
– 530+ providers and managers trained
– 150 women’s groups supported, with improved access to community health insurance
– 19 national measures adopted following 44 advocacy initiatives
– 266 young legal professionals supported
– 4 multisectoral protocols adopted to coordinate the response to gender‑based violence

A Comprehensive Support System

Thanks to these strengthened linkages between services, a coordinated pathway for preventing and responding to gender‑based violence is taking shape within the project’s partner communities. From community awareness and medical care, to legal support and economic reintegration, women and adolescent girls receive tailored, safe, and holistic assistance.

Tens of thousands of people have already benefited from this coordinated continuum of care. Discover the impact of this integrated approach.

PLURIELLES is implemented by a consortium led by Santé Monde, Avocats sans frontières Canada (ASFC), and Socodevi, with financial support from Global Affairs Canada. It is estimated that approximately two million women and adolescent girls in the Mono department (Benin), the Cascades region (Burkina Faso), and the Kayes region (Mali) will be reached by the project’s activities.
